Keepers of Traditional Farming Knowledge and Genetic Diversity

The loss of traditional farming knowledge and genetic diversity is dramatically demonstrated in modern chicken farming. The average employee in the Australian chicken meat industry has only ever managed high-performance strains of meat chickens, and has no understanding of the normal behaviour of slower growing chickens. The practice of using mobile shelters to allow chickens to renovate the land is considered unviable in large-scale production, and hands-on farming has been gradually replaced by the computer. Sommerlad farmers have an important role as keepers of traditional chicken farming knowledge.

Tastes of the Earth

As well as genetic diversity, you will also notice subtle differences in each Sommerlad farmer's finished table birds influenced by their "terroir", such as the farmer's climate, soil type and native pasture species. Differences are also influenced by their locally available feed sources, and processing options. These differences are something to be celebrated, as they represent artisan chicken farming - which is the very opposite of factory farming.

Retail price also varies, depending on factors like the farmer's cost of feed, processing and distribution.

Please note that Sommerlad Poultry can only enter into chick supply agreements with their authorised farmers, and they're unable to supply Sommerlad chicks for home use. There are currently no openings for new authorised farmers, but if you are interested in future opportunities please read the information here.
